From the sun-baked hills of Cirò on Calabria’s Ionian coast, Cristian Vumbaca’s Rosato is 100% organically grown Gaglioppo, the region’s great native red grape. A quick four-to-five-hour maceration gives it its vivid coral color before fermentation and five to six months of aging in stainless steel. This is definitely rosato with some bite: wild strawberry, sour cherry and pomegranate come first, chased by blood orange, rose and a distinctly Mediterranean snap of herbs. Bright acidity cuts through Gaglioppo’s naturally savory fruit, while a salty, lightly tannic edge gives the palate real grip. Dry, brisk and mouthwatering, with enough structure to move well beyond aperitivo territory.
