Umbria
Umbria is home to Italy's deepest, darkest wine, from the Sagrantino grape. Despite its fame, the area planted is small, and only a handful of producers control much of the production. While single varietal versions are relatively rare, it is often blended with Sangiovese to yield a super-Tuscan like wine without using French grapes like Cabernet. Umbria is also home to the historic white wine region of Orvieto, which spills over into nearby Lazio.
