Sardinia

With its picturesque coastline and paradise beaches, one would expect light, minerally whites to pair with seafood and shellfish. Vermentino fits the description, and Sardinia is regarded, with Liguria, as the best region for the grape. What's more surprising are the Grenache and Carignan based reds from the rugged interior, which are perfect pairings for the local wild boar. Fuller than is typical from France but more restrained than Spain's inky black versions, Sardinians have a style all their own.
