Luca's Roero Nebbiolo bottling is a pretty darn delightful example of just how unique, expressive, and delicate the Nebbiolo grape from this part of the world can be when in the right hands. From vines young and old planted over steep, sandy slopes, the wine sees a 30 day maceration on skins (with some whole bunches - for added structure and savoriness) before being pressed off to old casks for eighteen months. There is something untamed, but gentle, perfumed and kind here – Nebbiolo, a grape that is typically more guarded, more mysterious, is all about the give in this instance. Bright strawberry with a surprising veil of wild herbs; delicate but full of swirling, energetic red flavors and spiced forest-y things, retaining a wild streak that is clean, but charmingly unpredictable. From a warmer vintage, this is already open and expressive, with great balance and fine tannins.
