Perhaps the boldest of the Sequerciani lineup, this is rare monovarietal bottling of the little known indigenous grape, Foglia Tonda, whose name is derived from the circular form of its leaves but whose origins otherwise remain a mystery. In the past, it was blended with Sangiovese to impart tannins and aromas. A vigorous vine, Foglia Tonda produces generous crops, but of which only the smallest, select bunches are ultimately harvested, with vinification in cement with native yeasts and no addition of sulfur, and maturation in terracotta amphorae for about 12 months. The result is an elegant, intense, and full-bodied wine with its Mediterranean upbringing on display: a complex bouquet of exotic spice, salty herbs, balsamic, ripe berries, and red wild flowers, and a palate dominated by black fruit and fine-granined tannins.
