While the Colleonis’ Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino often grab all the attention, never discount Selvarella (the 'little forest'), the fruit for which Marino grows in less-heeled areas of Montalcino that he has identified as top terroirs. Vinified with whole clusters and no sulphur this is not your average Sangiovese — deep, vibrant, and soft, it’s filled with notes of ripe, rustic berries and floral spices, with a streak of bitter cherry and a pleasant dusting of chewy Tuscan tannin. Purple plum, cranberry, sweet herbs, licorice, hints of mineral, truffle, and pomegranate contribute to an underlying earthy, sanguine drive. Fresh acidity and purity of fruit give it polish, while a lush texture and lingering finish of strawberry and kirsch evoke the more sensuous elements of the Tuscan countryside.
