'Solinghino,' named for the valley in which these vineyards sit, is the entry-level bottling in Picchioni’s line-up of wines. And while the ‘baby’ of his offerings might appear to be simple, fun, and fruity at the onset, serious complexity emerges with some time after opening. Derived of 60% Croatina, 30% Barbera, and 10% Ughetta, the hillside for these vines is located in the Solinga Valley on a slope of vertigo-inducing steepness; here calcareous sandy soils bring aromatic lift, while a mixture of rounded, granite-like quartzite cobbles impart strength to a red dominated by raspberry, roasted blood orange, fresh green herbals, and tea-like tannins. Simple vinification, a short stint in cement, followed by a few more years developing in the cellar prior to release makes for a yet polished mid-week pop and pour, perfect for fending off the chills of these last few weeks of winter.
