Palagrello Nero, with smaller portions of Aglianico and Casavecchia, from deep in the heart of Campania’s Terre del Volturno region. Deep purple/ruby in the glass, this is a wine that takes time to spread its wings and will definitely warrant a full hour in the decanter, if not longer. What emerges is precise cherry fruit, tamarind, and eastern spice drawn across a palate of bright, fruit-driven acidity that, while shocking to some at first, provides a refreshing counterpoint to dense fruit and robust tannic bones. The mouth delivers more of that black fruit, earth, game and more savory, black spice. A stunning example of the potential elegance in the south.
