Cannonau is better known as Grenache, and while the origins of the grape are much debated, many believe it originated in Sardinia. Mario’s 100% Cannonau, which presents light ruby red in the glass, is exquisitely balanced and clean. Fermented with native yeast in stainless steel tanks, it sees a maceration period of about 14 days;  the shorter maceration period contributes to the more restrained style, not usually found  in big, bold Cannonau. The wine then ages in steel tanks for 8-12 months before being bottled without fining or filtration. It admirably retains all the punchiness of Cannonau  – wild berries, herbs, and sea spray – carried on a much lither frame than is typical of the region. Just a touch smoky-earthy and full of sun-kissed, little red fruits, it has an undertone of more savory notes like grilled stone fruit and wild mint. Fine tannins and general island vibrancy make this very appropriate for a light chill if so desired.

Mario is a second-generation winemaker, but his family has been growing grapes in Sorso on the island of Sardinia for as long as anyone can remember. Sorso is the place where the hills marry the sea on the Northwest side of Sardinia, the capital of Romangia, and, as the first territory of Sardinia to be colonized by the ancient Romans, has always been the hub of agricultural production and trade in Northern Sardinia. The Bagellas’ 12.5 acres of vines average 90 years old in soils that are predominately chalk and limestone. The hill the vineyard sits on creates a natural amphitheater that captures the ocean breezes, keeping the grapes from over ripening in the hot coastal sun. Marco  has taken it upon himself to move the winery and vineyard operations in a more natural direction, feeling he has a responsibility to respect the land his family has called home for so many years. As Mario puts it, “I love making wine because it gives me the opportunity to express myself. For me wine is sharing, but above all it is a beautiful tool to appreciate the diversity, between people, vines and territories.”
