90% blend of Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio, fruit for Salvo's 'entry level’ rosso grows at soaring altitudes of 700 meters, in sandy, volcanic soils. The wine, in Salvo’s mind, is his most important as it reflects his vision of what traditional wine on Etna was before modern technology arrived. The 2024 is a total pleasure, beguiling right off the bat with a blend of crushed ashen stone, dried rose, lavender, and smoky black cherry. Juicy in character yet still deep and complex, with perfumed wild berry fruits and mineral tones, its mix of brisk acidity and edgy tannins add tension toward the close, leaving the palate completely refreshed, even as the cheeks pucker and notes of raspberry and spice slowly fade. A wine with a sense of place…as unencumbered, representative, and as local as it gets.
