From Palmento Caselle Contrada, a .5 hectare terraced vineyard, at a lofty height of 900 meters on Etna’s eastern slope, the vines here are ungrafted Carricante that Salvo propagated from various cuttings of exceptional vineyards over the years. The altitude and aspect of the parcel here give conditions more like the mountains of Trentino than eastern Sicily; the temperature variation and higher rainfall suit the flinty character of Carricante, giving clarity and focus. More delicate than usual, the 2023 is immediately enticing, with an array of dusty florals, shaved ginger, and freshly sliced peach; quite saline in character but still showing round textures and plenty of ripe orchard fruit, there's a wonderful wonderful display of contrast and depth. It finishes with incredible length, highly structured and tense, with a resonance of exotic flowers and citrus. Always a prime candidate for the cellar, should you be able to resist for now!
