The Cavallottos' old-vine, Barbera d'Alba Superiore is a finessed and layered wine, concentrated and cheerful, and always one of the classiest examples of the variety we get to encounter. Pulled from within the Bricco Boschis cru and aged in large botti for two years before bottling, the 'Vigna del Cuculo' is packed full of blueberry and plum, violets and licorice, roasted almond aromas and flavors, a punchy, savory close and alongside dusty, light grippy tannins, and great length. There is attractive softness here, too, contrasted against its bright acidity. Drinks beautifully – dare we say irresistibly – upon release, but would be an absolute treat to find stashed away after another few years.
