Derived predominantly from Chiavannasca – the local name for Nebbiolo – the ‘Alpi Retiche’ Rosato also contains a good smattering of nigh-on-extinct local obscurities in Rossola, Brugnola, Negrera, Beessana, and Pignola, the ‘Noah’s Ark’ of sorts on the label a nod to the preservation of these rarities. Macerations are brief, and both vinification and aging occurs in steel tanks, with preservation and expression of classic alpine angles and crystalline transparency clearly a big driving factor here. Absolutely spectacular this year – crystalline, Alpine watermelon sugar elixir – it shimmers with pale salmon hues and a glint of copper, a visual cue to its delicacy. The nose is gossamer and lifted — wild strawberry, red currant, and candied rose drift out alongside whispers of alpine herbs and crushed petals. On the palate, it’s feather-light yet quietly complex, carrying notes of citrus zest and mountain berries over a fine mineral thread. A hint of smoky earth anchors the finish, adding just enough gravity to this bright, graceful, and endlessly enchanting expression.
