Rosso di Valtellina is a perfect introduction to the wines of the region, the northernmost sub-zone of Lombardy, where ‘heroic viticulture’ on steep slopes is the norm. The Tenuta Scerscé vineyards are set against the backdrop of the Rhaetian Alps, at altitudes of up to 700 meters; at these remarkable heights, seemingly amongst the clouds, Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca, is meticulously cultivated. A little lighter and less tannic than its counterparts in Piemonte, ‘Nettare’ is fermented and aged in stainless steel and cement tanks. As the first wine produced each vintage, it is a ‘nectar’-like wine designed for everyone and all occasions. A remarkable entry-level bottling, it opens compactly with aromas of wild rose, red berry, licorice, blood oranges, and a hint of flint and black pepper. The palate is bright and direct, with mountain berries, star anise, and a hint of botanical herbs. Lively acidity and lithe tannins make it the perfect accompaniment to food. This is smoky, saline, strawberry bliss that goes on and on.
