Oliver McCrum

The only red traditionally made here, Sandi’s Teranno is reminiscent of Syrah or Cabernet Franc in profile – while genetically related to another Friulian red, Refosco – with an opaque ruby color, complex aroma and flavor of black plum, grilled meat, and a creamy lactic note. Farmed organically with the intention not to give anything other than what the terroir of the Karst supplies in the glass, grapes see spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels; the wine ages for 12 months in oak barrels before bottling without filtration. This Terrano is pure Carso in a glass. It opens with an earthy, deeply alluring bouquet of wild red fruit, grilled sage, shaved cedar, and crushed ashen stone, touched by that salty wind that sweeps down from the limestone hills to the sea. The 2018 shows a striking balance of energy and elegance: the palate is both electric and refined, silky and rounded in texture, yet taut with minerality and tension. As it lingers, gently grippy tannins and a subtle chew bring structure without weight. It’s dramatically long and saturating, leaving a trace of salt, rock, and ripe berries. This isn’t about polish or pretense — it’s about clarity, purity, and the honest voice of the Carso. A wine that feels alive, like the rugged land that shaped it. Drink 2026 - 2034
