We see the ‘Coste di Valanche’ as a shout-out not only to Nicoletta’s impeccable taste – these are simply two of her favorite varieties, so she planted them – but to the undersung heterogeneity, and perhaps, quirkier aspects, of the region, particularly among its finest, most dedicated and idiosyncratic producers. It’s not just all Nebbiolo, folks. In the mid-2010s, Nicoletta was forced to cease production of her much-loved ‘Coste di Riavolo,’ as the parcel of Riesling and Gewürztraminer she used for it was ill beyond rescue. In 2017, she planted these two varieties anew, in the cooler upper reaches of the Rocca Ciglie vineyard at 650 meters altitude, and in 2020 launched this new cuvée, what you have here today. 90% Riesling and 10% Gewurztraminer, fermented spontaneously and macerated on its skins for five days, combined with the elegance-enhancing character of the newer source vineyard, it’s brighter, finer, and slightly more delicate than its predecessor. It still packs a punch, however, with charred pineapple, jasmine, and a twist of summer savory bursting forth, followed by baked pear and juicy yellow orchard fruit. A snap of Granny Smith skin and a touch of glycerine keep it taut yet supple; the palate is sleek and polished, balancing refined weight with a lean, cheek-tingling acidity. Finishing bright and precise, this leaves a clean hit of bitter almond and citrus tang that lingers just long enough to make you want more – classic Reiseling, and classic Nicoletta.
