Prugnolo Gentile is the 'noble' variant of Sangiovese found in Montepulciano and historically is co-planted with supporting varieties like Canaiolo and Mammolo; following her 'one wine' methodology, this is a 80/20 split between Sangiovese and its complements. Bunches are harvested manually and destemmed with the berries left mainly whole. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in concrete tanks. Maceration lasts around 10 days before a very gentle pressing. The wine is aged for 2 years in a mix of French and Slavonian oak botti. A nose leading with black cherry, plum, red currants and spiced orange cake evolves into something more savory and mysterious - floral, tobacco, meat, and leather territory. As is standard with Sanguineto’s finest wines, there’s a core of red clay earth that perfectly frames the nose and palate. When stood next to equivalent Brunellos and Chiantis it’s clear that this is a wine that strongly over-delivers and moreover, will continue to improve for at least another 7-10 years.
