Similar in make-up to the 'Vigne Vecchie' – old clones of Sangio, Canaiolo, and Malvasia Nera, all cofermentated – the Chianti Riserva sees longer and more intense barrel aging, with four years large French oak barrels and barriques, follwed by at least one year in bottle. The result is Roberto's rustic Rossi dialed up a notch, with enveloping aromas of morello cherry, plum, berries, dark chocolate, white pepper, and tobacco. Velvety yet distinct tannins wrap around a serious, long-lasting finish that carries all those rich fruit and spice notes through the end. This is biodynamic Tuscany for lovers of big-bodied California wines (take that, Napa!), and works very well as a vino di meditazione, too.
