LaLu’s 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo comes from young vines in La Morra and Monforte d’Alba, planted on limestone, clay, and marl between 300 and 400 meters. A cold, rainy vintage demanded ruthless selection — Lara and Luisa kept just half their fruit — but what made the cut was beautiful. Fermented as whole berries with no stems and 12 days on the skins in concrete, then aged eight months in Austrian oak vats. The result is Nebbiolo at its most fragrant and nimble, as rose petals, red cherry and raspberry lead into tar, anise and a cool snap of herbal spice. It’s juicy and high-toned on the palate, with bright acidity and fine, lightly grippy tannins giving shape to the vivid red fruit. Perfumed, precise, and seriously energetic, this is a stellar introduction to two winemakers to watch. Great today, better on day two, and even more so if you can lose a bottle or two in the cellar.
