Nusserhof Kretzer Rosato 2020

Nusserhof Kretzer Rosato 2020

$34.00

Just a glance at the bottle is enough to make it clear that Nusserhof’s ‘Kretzer’ Rosato is a far cry from your average salmon-pink Provençal porch pounder. Pulled from the Mayrs' 40-to-90-year-old Lagrein vines located around the winery, the Kretzer draws its name from the German word ‘kretze,’ a woven basket through which grape clusters were pressed in a bygone era, moreover stylistically indicating a darker more structured expression of Lagrein rosé that has been ubiquitous in this region for centuries. A 50/50 combination of direct-press and saignée juice, the Kretzer is aged in large oak botti for at least 12 months before release, thus, the vintage is always one behind most of the rosé market in any given year. Drinking more like a light red, the Kretzer leads with pronounced aromatics of red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, with more delicate notes of thyme and forest floor. A burst of ripe red fruit spreads across the palate (you can tell the summers are warm here!), balanced by a healthy dollop of acidity, silky tannins and a lingering, bitter pine-y herbal note. Don’t drink too cold!

Heinrich Mayr’s Nusserhof estate is located high in the South Tyrolean mountains of the Alto Adige, nestled amidst the rapidly expanding outer limits of the country’s northernmost regional hub, the city of Bolzano. Stewarded by both Heinrich and his wife Elda, the Mayrs’ family land existed for almost two centuries well beyond the outskirts of this previously quaint mountain town, though the explosion of growth that proceeded WWII has now seen the couple’s vineyards all but engulfed by ever encroaching development. And while this has no doubt impacted the family’s way of life (not to mention their stunning vistas of the nearby alps), the Mayrs have continued to stand tall in the face of urban and industrial sprawl to produce pure, singular, and unmistakable alpine-inflected wines. Organic farming and a decidedly low-tech, traditionalist approach in the cantina only further amplify the duo’s one-eyed focus on championing the Alto Adige’s native varieties.
