Agnanum Campi Flegrei Falanghina 2022

Agnanum Campi Flegrei Falanghina 2022

$27.00

Rafelle’s Falanghina ‘Campi Flegrei’ truly feels like a stamp of time and place in a 750ml bottle, seeming to showcase the briny sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the smoldering underpinnings of Campania’s volcanic geological past, and the time-honored traditions of the region’s millenia of winemaking knowledge. The wine undergoes native yeast fermentation in stainless steel, continuing in the same vessels for malolactic fermentation and aging, keeping the expression of fruit purity front and center, with just a touch of sulfur added before bottling to straighten any out-of-place bacterial elements. Honeyed almond, white orchard blossom, and Bartlett pear lead a wine driven by zippy acidity, with more taut though somewhat waxy, citrus-forward elements of lemon and grapefruit emerging from beneath, each mouthful seemingly imbued with its own personal kiss of salt air. A wonderfully transportational wine driven to even loftier heights by the compactness and intensity of its old-vine fruit.

When it comes to fascinating wine-growing regions, Campi Flegrei has uniqueness in spades.  Lying northwest of Naples, along the Amalfi Coast, where winds from the Tyrrhenian Sea rush in each afternoon like clockwork, the area comprises a large caldera of volcanic ash, sand, and basalt. It is here that Agnanum’s winemaker Rafaelle Moccia leans into the ancient vineyard traditions first established by the Romans, focusing heavily on the Falanghina grape, a variety that even Pliny the Elder documented as ‘one of the finest grapes.’ Rafaelle’s 10 hectares of vines range from 60 to 200 years old, and are some of the few that remain planted at the top of the steep Agnano crater. While he practices organic farming in his vineyards, it has never been to gain a catchy certification but instead as a byproduct of using tried-and-true methods from centuries ago. And while Agnanum is Moccia’s labor of love, he is also celebrated in the local culinary scene for the raising of rabbits destined for the dinner tables of some of the finest restaurants in the region.
