Winemaker Tasting, Wednesday November 6: Giacomo Bartolommei of Caprili (Montalcino)

Caprili, which lies south of the town of Montalcino, at over 300 meters above sea level, has been a steady performer in the region for decades and a regular stalwart on the racks of our store earmarked for Tuscany's myriad vinous gems. It's an estate that remains resolutely traditional – even through generational changes in its leadership – fermenting only with natural yeasts and ageing the wines for extended periods (3+ years for the Brunellos) in large Salvonian casks. Today, Giacomo Bartolommei represents the 4th generation of Bartolommei men to create wines for the Caprili estate. The young, energetic winemaker is in his 30s, but has honed his craft admirably under the guidance of his father and grandfather, already turning out a handful of incredibly high caliber vintages that not only continue to draw positive press and sought-after awards for the estate, but have also worked to inspire a palpable level of respect in his abilities among many of the region's legendary producers. 3 wines.
