Ciliegiolo is one of the oldest grape varieties in Tuscany and can be traced back to the early 17th century. Like Vermentino, it was thought to have originated in Spain, introduced to Tuscany by pilgrims. However, recent genetic tests have shown that it originates from Tuscany and is closely related to Sangiovese. Often living in the shadow of its more famous cousin, Ciliegiolo is perhaps the unsung hero of Tuscany, fresher and fruitier but also with notable structure and potential for longevity in the cellar. Sequerciani’s 100% Cieliegiolo bottling sees native yeast fermentation and concrete and amphorae aging. Boasting a surprisingly deep ruby, almost purple, hue in the glass, with notes of black and red cherry, Mediterranean herbs, forest floor and mineral and marine hints and a silky, tannic texture, it saddles up nicely with more savory, meaty dishes.
