Being located on the southern fringe of the Barolo zone the Principiano estate benefits from the biodiversity of the Alta Langhe, the wilderness that lies beyond the dense planting of Nebbiolo vineyards. Overlooking this uncommon (for the Langhe) untamedness, are Ferdinand's Timorassao vines, from a young Alba vineyard at a high altitude of 750 meters. A variety native to the region, this Timorasso shows fleshy white melon, subtle almond, and a tense citrus edginess, with herbaceous aromatics of chamomile and white flowers. In some ways like a fine-boned Riesling, perhaps, very reminiscent of the snow covered alps that form the not too distant backdrop to the vineyard. Ferdinand's hands-off approach and the vines' high elevation enhance the grape's natural acidity, one that gives it a fantastic capacity to age and develop complexity and depth.
