Named in homage to the estate’s famed founder, the Baron Ugo comes from a single vineyard of the same name perched at about 570 meters elevation (one of the very highest in Chianti Classico), and is comprised of 90% Sangiovese with the traditional Chianti blending grapes Colorino and Canaiolo making up the rest. Aged in large botti of French and Slavonian oak (mostly used) for 36 months, followed by three more months in concrete vats and 6 months in bottle before release, the 2018 is super impressive. Unmistakable in its Tuscan pedigree, rich yet nuanced, it captures striking expression of the estate. Opening with inviting aromas of spices, tobacco-leaf, sandalwood, and bright red fruits, the 2018 is radiant and savory, the taut, chiseled palate delivering juicy red cherry, crushed strawberry, star anise and white pepper alongside firm refined tannins. Loaded with finesse and tension, it's youthfully austere at this stage and will certainly go the distance should you have the patience. Drink now-2038.
