With a whopping 60 bottles making it to Californian shores this year, the 2015 Kraema Rosso is a true unicorn in the wild. At once iconoclastic - the Santini’s choose to eschew the Carema DOC classification in lieu of pursuing their own approach to vinification and aging - the Kraema is also unmistakably redolent of high-altitude, cool-climate Nebbiolo. Tight red fruits - cherry, raspberry, pomegranate - wash over spicy red florals, fennel seed, black licorice, as well as a subtle smoked meat quality. The mouthfeel here is high-toned and svelte; what it lacks in muscle comparative to its more traditional siblings in the south, it makes up for in aromatic punch, suavely silky tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Give this one at least 60 mins after opening and serve in your largest stems.
