‘Malpelo’ is a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappucio, and Alicante (Grenache on Etna), all bush-trained and coming from historic vineyards over 60-years-old, at an altitude of 1,000 meters. Raised entirely in steel, in the cellar the wine does not need help or correction; spontaneous fermentation, no sulfites or other additives added. A floral, high-toned nose leads with rich raspberry and freeze-dried strawberry, backed by blood orange and violet, all quickly drawing you in. Its opening is a real journey – from super rocky and mineral volcanic earth to spiced and candied red fruits, do not underestimate or pigeonhole this wine. Light on its feet with fine, minimal tannins, it drinks easily – best with a light chill – but reveals a darker, savory core. Notes of clove, five-spice, and black cardamom add depth, while subtle hints of molasses and hoisin suggest a sweet-smoky umami edge. Earthy and aromatic, it’s a quaffer with surprising complexity — BBQ-ready and full of intrigue.
