A limited production 100% Teroldego offering that is part experiment, part riserva. Like the usual Sgarzon, fruit is harvested from the cooler and sandier plots at the Foradori vineyard, destemmed, put directly into clay amphorae for an open-top, spontaneous fermentation without added sulfur, and followed by 6-8 months of maceration with the skins. After another couple of months in concrete off the skins, Sgarzon normale would be bottled, but for this special version, a small and select portion is instead racked directly into a cylindrically-shaped, smaller-capacity tinaja for a full year of additional aging. It is then released about 2 years after the regular Sgarzon bottling.
This takes the elegance of the original release and adds a deeper texture as well as a darker fruit profile. Dusty dried roses, autumnal spice and black cherries create an inviting bouquet. It’s beautifully balanced with silken textures and a core of cool-toned acidity. A subtle hint of licorice and an air of lavender linger as the 2021 fades with a gentle tug of sweet tannins.
