Elena has always been fascinated by the Colli Tortonesi area and the potential and versatility of the Timorasso grape, and her passion led them to lease a vineyard in the south-eastern spur of the province of Alessandria. Here, soils are ripe with Sant’Agata fossil marls containing twenty million year-old compacted calcareous clay, responsible for the beloved savoriness and salty minerality that Timorasso manifests in these parts. The proud, sole white wine of the Penna-Currado project, this is a made using a brief maceration of the skins during crushing and submerged cap fermentation, followed by ageing in clay Clayver anfora; as such, the wine takes on a richness and complexity but without oxidation. Their 2024 is gorgeous: creamy, ample and beautifully layered in the glass, it offers up hints of apricot, chamomile and white flowers, with light tropical accents that develop over time. Beautifully done.
