Cascina Melognis farms 30-year-old Pelaverga vines at approximately 400 meters, rooted in rocky, clay-rich soils. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October, fermented spontaneously, and macerated for 20 days before resting six months in stainless steel. No oak, no embellishment. The resulting wine is wonderfully distinctive: translucent ruby, with aromas of wild strawberries, red currants, rose petals, and geranium, followed by a lively flicker of white pepper. Light-bodied and exceptionally fragrant, with juicy red fruit, bright acidity, and a delicate, almost weightless finish. At just 12% alcohol, it's a particularly versatile red, and a terrific reminder that Piedmont's vinous treasures extend well beyond Nebbiolo.
