Nebbiolo d’Alba, as a style, is too often an afterthought for Piemontese producers — made from young vines, served by-the-glass, and quickly set aside so that the serious work of drinking Barolo can begin. Penna-Currado’s San Sebastiano 2023 is the opposite. From the San Sebastiano site in Monforte d’Alba, with vines ranging from 15 to over 60 years old across multiple exposures, it is farmed and vinified with the seriousness of Barolo, beginning with a cold soak, followed by a long, traditional fermentation and extended submerged-cap maceration. Aging takes place in cask for 12 months, intentionally shorter than Barolo requirements, allowing the wine to show earlier without sacrificing depth. The nose is lifted and precise, with raspberry, cherry, and wild strawberry unfolding into rose and violet; the palate is polished and vibrant, with red berries and a touch of citrus energy carried by bright acidity, while tannins are silky and enveloping, giving structure without austerity. This perfectly captures the pedigree and complexity of Nebbiolo, with an immediacy and grace that makes it compelling from the outset.
