100% Blatterle, an indigenous variety that goes back centuries in the Alto Adige but has shrunk down to a mere 1.5 hectares in production today. Nusserhof is one of only three growers of this thin-skinned, golden-yellow rarity and is the largest of them with their half hectare in Bolzano. All work and harvest is done by hand, and fermentation is spontaneous in stainless steel with a two-week maceration. The wine goes through malo and is aged in cement tank and botte two years. Blatterle is not recognized by Italian wine authorities, so even as a Vino Bianco, the name cannot legally appear on the label, hence the label’s unique punctuation each year – here, ‘Bl.te.le.’ The 2021 is wild and exotic, with a gorgeous blend of tropical florals, peaches and chamomile. This is texturally deep, full in feel, with sweet spices and candied lime accentuating notes of nectarine and green melon. For all of its roundness and flamboyance, it finishes wonderfully fresh and clean, as a touch of mint slowly fades. Production maxes out at 500-600 bottles.
