The "Ronco Basso" is one of Ronco del Gnemiz's most powerful Chardonnays – and the 2023 vintage displays a particularly refined balance between substance and freshness. The lower parcel near San Giovanni al Natisone, whose Ponca soils are rich in marl and sandstone, produces wines with denser fruit and a subtly creamy core. 2023 brought a changeable spring with sufficient rainfall and a hot, at times challenging, summer. However, the cool September nights maintained tension and led to a staggered, selective harvest at the end of the month. The must fermented spontaneously in used barriques and aged on the fine lees to develop density and structure without losing its freshness.
Pale straw yellow in the glass, with a delicate golden hue. The nose reveals ripe yellow stone fruit, candied lemon, and white flowers, along with subtle notes of toasted almonds, vanilla, and wet stone. On the palate, the 2023 is firmer and fresher than the warmer 2022: lively acidity and fine tannins keep the ripe fruit in perfect balance. The finish is long, with a saline edge and elegant spice. This combines freshness and depth at the highest levels – a Chardonnay with great potential that subtly yet clearly conveys the vintage's signature.
