Schioppettino, locally called “Ribolla Nera,” has been around since the 13th century in Friuli. Saved from the brink of extinction, it began its comeback in the 1970s and Gianni and Paolo Petrussa have successfully brought it into the modern age while maintaining its historical charm. The grape’s home is here in Prepotto, and this new bottling comes from a recently acquired single vineyard. The 2022 wafts up with a seductive bouquet of allspice, clove, dusty cherries and dried roses. It’s silky in texture, with a dense wave of mineral-tinged black fruits complemented by peppery spices (a Schioppetino hallmark) and saline-minerals. Medium-bodied, the wine tapers off long and lightly framed with lasting concentration and violet-tinged inner florals.
