The 2020s from Montevertine are shaping up to be modern-day classics – they offer a stunning mix of precision and power, tempered by a more moderate growing season. Long in the shadows of the highly sought-after Le Pergole Torte, the 2020 Montevertine is outrageously beautiful. Rich and sumptuous, it possesses tremendous fruit purity and exceptional balance. Dark red and purple berries and plum, lavender, rose petal, mint, and sweet spice abound, in a wine that marries the classicism of Montevertine with the solar intensity of today’s harvests.
Vines for the flagship Rosso come from a variety of parcels: primarily from the Montevertine plot itself (2.5 hectares of south-southeast-exposed vines planted in 1982) just below the house itself, but also from nearby Villanova and Il Pesa, along with choicer parcels from the Selvole and Il Casino vineyards mentioned above. Just as with “Pian del Ciampolo,” fermentation takes place naturally in enormous cement vats, but this spends a second year in cask before being bottled.
