The ‘Puro Sangue' comes from its own vineyard planted about 15 years ago, whose yields are about half of Luigi's other plots, and the wine carries a depth and density that justifies its name. Winemaking is essentially the same as the Taurasi 'Poliphemo,' only with an extra year in the barrel. An insanely precise and vibrant bouquet sets the tone — notes of blood-rich meat and iron filings, undergrowth, and incense intersect with high-tone sweet sarsaparilla and cinnamon spice giving structure to ripe black cherry and raspberry radiance. Another high octane bottling but with absolutely no heat to feel; 'energia pura,' as Luigi would say. Fine focus and grip, a juicy palate, and superb length on the nascently complex and very well-balanced, pleasingly balsamic finish. Dense but perfectly integrated tannins mean it can be enjoyed now but will last forever. A real rural masterpiece.
