The 'Vinupetra,' or 'wine of stone,' comes from just a single hectare of 100+ year-old-vines on Etna's north side. Here, Nerello Mascalese sees huge swings in day/night temperature allowing the wine to walk a tightrope between concentrated, ripe fruit and a disciplined frame of structured minerality. Super expressive, the 2023 opens with a wild mix of blood orange, sour cherry, rosemary, and crushed stone. It’s soft-textured and lifted, with a tart berry concentration that builds toward the close, finishing with loads of tension, mixing edgy tannins with primary fruit and violet florals. It may a bit more time to find its balance, but this year's Vinupetra shows remarkable complexity, befitting its old-vine heritage. The unique soil and subsoil where these vines grow accounts for the wine’s personality and its capacity for slow development and graceful aging.
