Brand new to the lineup! A bright, easy-going Etna red that wears its name with a wink— ‘sfuso’ may mean ‘bulk wine,’ or the kind you fill your own jug with down at the local cantina, but there’s nothing commonplace about it. Mostly old, bush-vine Nerello Mascalese with a scattering of Nerello Cappuccio, Grenache, and local whites, it’s fermented partly in clay qvevri and aged in chestnut barrels. Things are never boring chez Vino di Anna, as the final blend pulls from the estate’s 2022 field blend, enlivened with a splash of Palmento Rosso and just a dash Jeudi 15 Rosato for lift. (Future vintages will also be an ever-changing melange.) Juicy cherry and plum fruit meet savory spice and that unmistakable Etna minerality. Unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with minimal sulfur, Sfuso is pure volcanic joy — fragrant, nimble, and best served with a chill.
