Federico Scarzello is the third generation to make wine at his family’s estate in Barolo, taking over in 2001. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, and has been tipped as one of Barolo’s rising stars for his respect for traditional winemaking combined with an utter dedication to quality. Long macerations, very large casks, and very minimal intervention in the cellar are the hallmarks of this winery. Scarzello has prided itself on its independence and its individuality, and Federico’s Langhe Nebbiolo is an exceedingly pretty style (Langhe Nebbiolo is typically a lighter, fresher, and more accessible wine that is often made from younger vines or non-Barolo/Barbaresco vineyards, with no mandatory aging period.) Pure cherry-inflected fruit is front and center while its beautiful aromatics of spicy camphor, cinnamon, tar and fennel wild fennel add interest.
