Gianluigi Lano is an understated, stoic man who works a small certified organic farmstead in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, Barbaresco. His wines are complex and classically styled, but always offer plenty of truffle/floral intrigue to compliment the instantly gratifying dark fruit. There is no modern technology in the cellar. The most impactful "technique" is that Gianluigi refuses to release wines until they're truly ready to drink. If that means the Barbera needs 4 years in barrel/bottle or the Barbaresco needs 5 or 6, so be it. Each wine leaves the cellar when it is ready, and no sooner.
A wine of elegance and intensity – a reminder that Barolo may be King, but Barbaresco has all the grace of a Queen. In this wine the qualities that make Nebbiolo such an enticing variety are on full display. The nose is perfumed with high-toned red fruits, roses, liquorice and soil, while the he palate is gives wild strawberry fruit and aromatic spice against a framework of plentiful, velvet tannins and bright acidity. Precise and nuanced, patience will no doubt reward considerate drinkers with more intriguing development.
