From Palmento Caselle Contrada, a .5 hectare terraced vineyard, at a lofty height of 900 meters on Etna’s eastern slope. The vines here are ungrafted Carricante that were propagated from various cuttings that Salvo had taken from exceptional vineyards over the years. The altitude and aspect of the parcel here give conditions more like the mountains of Trentino than eastern Sicily; the temperature variation and higher rainfall suit the flinty character of Carricante which give clarity and focus not unlike a Alto-Adige Riesling. Refined and savory, it shows notes of young young peach, mint, and white smoke, as mouth-watering acidity lends to its impeccable balnce, and saline meets tangerine and ginger on the lingering finish. Medium-bodied and mineral-tinged, this is a truly one-of-a-kind white and well as a prime candidate for the cellar, should you be able to resist for now.
