Monte Regio is the neighborhood in Monterey David grew up in. Named for the Italian translation of "Monterey," Monte Regio was at the heart of the city's Italian-American community. The name of this wine, a blend of Ribolla Gialla, Riesling, Friulano and Malvasia, is inspired by the Monterey of my youth, which was a great expression of the cultural and culinary melange for which California is famous. In Monte Regio, fresh seafood was abundant, coastal produce was at your fingertips, a rich Spanish and Mexican heritage was celebrated, and football was king (one Monterey High team featured four players who later made it to the NFL!). Full bodied and powerful, with rich orchard fruit flavors and mouth watering acidity.
34% Ribolla Gialla, 34% Riesling, 23% Friulano, 9% Malvasia Bianca. Hand harvested and directly pressed. Fermentation with wild yeast from the vineyard and a full secondary fermentation was allowed to slowly complete with native bacteria throughout the winter and into spring. 10 months elevage in neutral puncheon, followed by 12 months in bottle.
