The bigger and bolder native grape in Castelfeder's stable of reds, the 'Rieder' Lagrein has a complex, sauvage-esque bouquet of wild berries, violets, and cured meats, accompanied by a juicy palate redolent of raspberry, black cherry, clove, and white pepper. Grown in loamy alluvial soils, the grapes are hand picked and destemmed, seeing a 10-14 day maceration in stainless steel followed by about 6 months on the lees; the result is a wine still with some muscle still but an overall soft and harmonious tannic structure.
