Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Vigna Pipparello 2009

The Bea family, can be traced back as far as 1500 to the area of Montefalco, in the region of Umbria; an area not only known for Sangiovese but for Sagrantino. The entire property not only functions as a winery but as essentially as a farm, producing olive oil, vegetables and maintaining livestock.

The vines in the Pipparello vineyard are a minimum of 20 years old and is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano and 15% Sagrantino. Maceration tends to last 40 to 50 days. Post fermet, the wine spends a year in stainless steel tanks and then two years in large oak barrels. Released after an additional year of bottle-aging.

Regardless of the warmer than usual '09 vintage, we like enjoy the 'Pipparello' for its density and mere wild characters; herbaceous and a little mossy. Wood-fired roasted lamb matches up well.
