Il Roccolo di Monticelli Monticelli Bianco 2020

Il Roccolo di Monticelli Monticelli Bianco 2020

$32.00

Silvia’s Bianco bottling hails from a few parcels of 60-75 year old vines planted on 2 hectares of calcareous, rocky soils. Dominated by Garganega, the Veneto’s most ubiquitous white variety, the 2020 rendition of her Bianco sees a healthy dose of Trebbiano in the mix, along with a small percentage of as yet unidentified white grapes that are smattered throughout her vineyards.  The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard at the beginning of September. From there, the grapes spend a whopping six months macerating on skins post-fermentation before being pressed off to stainless tanks. Deeply meditative and zen-like in the glass, this is a complex and borderline flawless orange wine that seems to capture grape, place and winemaker in one deftly crafted mouthful. Stopping short of any kind of grippy astringency, the Monticello Bianco’s firm core is driven by preserved lemon, nectarine and a splash of aromatic and sweet dill pickle brine, with overtures of leafy green herbs, saffron and passionfruit-tinged soda rounding off a delicious and versatile Venetian wine.

Located in the hills of Vallata di Mezzane, just beyond the outer suburbs of Verona, the young, bubbly and highly energetic Silvia Tezza has taken the reins of her family’s abandoned vineyards and revived them, turning out low-intervention bottlings that hark back to a past long before manipulative additives or invasive farming methods. After a formal education in agricultural science, wine quickly floated to the top of Silvia’s laundry list of passions, her early years spent tending to her family’s vineyards and doing literally everything from vineyard to cellar, fanning a flame that led to the foundations of Il Roccolo di Monticelli. Today, Silvia works tenaciously to produce the best that her limestone and volcanic matter-rich soils will offer her each year, allowing the land she works to speak through her wines and letting nature take its course via the cultivation of olive trees, bee colonies, and allowing endemic flora to thrive between the vines, in turn nurturing the soils and attracting local fauna to create a long-lasting, holistic and healthy environment.
