Le Rocche del Gatto Pigato 2013

Winemaker Fausto De Andreis of Rocche Del Gatto is located in the Ligurian town of Albenga, southwest of Savona. According to Gambero Rosso, he is one of the remaining Pigato artisans of the Ligurian coast.

Fausto De Andreis goes against mainstream production of Pigato, often a light-bodied, quaffable white. Faustos intent is to extract aromatics and complexity from the native Pigato grape. The wine sees a short maceration on the skins, followed by a six month period where the wine matures on the lees. Vineyards are steep and are sea-facing, while vines are planted on a mixture of granite soil, covered by a thin layer of reddish, iron-rich clay.

The result is an incredibly aromatic, medium-bodied wine that is saline, textured and full of freshly picked citrus. We particularly love this wine for its depth and lengthy finish.

Try pairing with a Ligurian fish stew. http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/ligurian-seafood-soup
