Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato Barolo 2012

Mauro has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both fabled winemakers of their era. Mauro is a dedicated traditionalist, adhering to methods such as lengthy fermentations and extended aging in botti (large barrels).

Monprivato is one of the Langhe’s, as well as Barolo’s, most cherished vineyards. Located in Castiglione Falletto, one of the most important villages of the Barolo zone, whose history dates back to Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor.

A mere couple of hectares were originally planted by Maurizio in 1904; years later the first bottlings of single-vineyards would occur in 1970.

Regardless of early ripening and late Septemeber rains, this 2011 Barolo still has plenty to offer. This wine shows ample red and dark (almost dried) fruits, rosehip, fennel and well-integrated tannins. Cellar-worthy.
