Giuseppe Mascarello Barbera Scudetto 2012


Giuseppe Mascarello began the family business back in 1881, in the village of Monforte d'Alba, where he purchased a site in Regione Pian della Polvere. Subsequently, years later Giuseppe's son, Maurizio would purchase a farm in the Monprivato in the area of Castiglione Falletto, producing predominately Dolcetto and Barbera, yet small portions of Nebbiolo. Years later, 'Monprivato' would become one of the best vineyard sites within the Barolo district.

Today, the winery is run by Mauro Mascarello and his wife Maria Theresa. Mauro chose to maintain the lasting traditions of his father and grandfathers, yet began experimenting between 1967 and 1977. He began to vinify based on vineyard site, showcasing a variety of grape and soil expression.

The Barbera is sourced from a vineyard known as Scudetto, located within Monforte d'Alba at 300m in elevation. Its name comes from its shape, which is a shield, 'Scudetto' in Italian. Soils are of brown clay and grey sand. Harvest takes place the first two weeks of October with a maceration period that lasts 15/20 days. These estate-grown grapes are harvested from 60/70-year-old vines with low yields. The wine is ultimately aged then in French oak for approximately 18 months.
