You’d be forgiven for never having heard of Pelgaverga Piccolo before. It’s cultivated only in a very small part of Piemonte, in Verduno, just down the northern slope of La Morra hill in Barolo. As with so many of the “little” grapes here, historically, it was known primarily for producing the wine the locals actually drank instead of being bottled to sell, the stuff that filled the carafes passed around the card tables and social gatherings of the Langhe. It’s finicky to grow and even harder to make, however, and so over time edged towards extinction. Pelaverga was well on its way out when, so the story goes, Elisa Burlotto, daughter of the famed Commandatore, convinced her father to plant a small parcel in order to continue to make the family’s ‘Easter wine.’  We’re very glad she did, and like to think it's pitch perfect for any holiday (or everyday) meal...

Pale in color and lithe on the palate, what Pelaverga may lack in tannins and heft, it makes up for in its delightful, very distinctive aromatics and vibrant acidity (hello, food-friendly). It's full of wild strawberry with a dash of plum jam and hallmark herbal notes – rosemary, wild thyme, anise – with a hint of fresh white pepper at the end. It takes well to a chill and most any meal – Thanksgiving very much included! – with a combination of esoteric pedigree and extreme agreeability that’s hard to match. With a profile like that, Pelaverga is rightfully back on the radar, though still is relatively minuscule in production. It’s the Burlottos who have taken the time and effort necessary to refine its cultivation (which isn’t easy) and vinification (ditto) to create a wine that maximizes Pelaverga’s many attributes. Still one of their rarer wines, now’s the time to give it a try (Pinot people, pay attention!) as the 2022 is another beauty — light and lively, extremely aromatic, bright and savory — and our few cases for the year are in!
