The base is always Nebbiolo vinified as a rosé, to maintain freshness and prevent overextraction; the remaining wines in the blend and their various proportions depend on each vintage’s strengths and characteristics. The 2024 vintage comprises 55% base Nebbiolo rosato, 22.5% Nebbiolo rosso, 21.5% Barbera, and 1% of the white grape Arneis which provides the wine with freshness and acidity. The red fist crushing a cluster of grapes on the label is a not-so-subtle nod to the communist symbol of the Red Fist. The priest for which the winery is named was an outspoken supporter of the coal miner rebellions of Italy during the 1820s. He was exiled to what is now the Roaga property, his life spared due to his affiliation with a very rich and powerful Piemontese family. This was an important moment in the history of workers’ rights in Italy and Giovanni sought to pay homage by creating a wine that was truly for the people.  Aromatically, Prete Rosso exhibits notes of delicate strawberry, raspberry, and crisp tart cherry. Bursting with lively acidity on the palate, mild tannins give it just enough backbone leading to an almost saline finish. A touch mysterious, it beguiles the drinker familiar with Nebbiolo. It gives off ‘crushable’ vibes but it’s way more than that: alongside the fruit component, its mentholy herbaceous tones weave themselves harmoniously into a gorgeous tapestry of freshness and power.
